Just a short drive from K Ko Surf Village lies one of Bali’s hidden gems—Sababay Winery. More than just a wine producer, Sababay is a socially conscious brand with roots in both quality craftsmanship and community upliftment. Founded by a Jakarta local with a mission to support grape farmers in North Bali, Sababay was built on the idea that good wine can (and should) do good. After more than a decade in business, they’ve earned international acclaim—including awards from wine experts in Switzerland and Georgia—all while staying close to their humble beginnings.

Sababay Timeline and Journey

Getting There Is a Breeze

One of the best parts? It’s only 8 minutes away from K Ko. Simply call a Grab and you’ll be dropped at the entrance with ease. For the more adventurous, you can walk along the beach to Nirmala and use the crosswalk to safely access the winery by foot. No long drive, no traffic stress—just a smooth start to a laid-back day.

Touring Sababay Winery

We joined the 2 PM wine tour and opted for the snack platter over the full dining experience. The tour began with a walk through their winemaking facilities. While the space isn’t enormous, it’s well-designed and thoughtfully run. Hearing about their process firsthand gave us a new appreciation for the effort behind each bottle.

Wine Tasting & Afternoon Unwinding

Snack Platter and Wine Tasting

By 2:45, the tasting began—and we quickly forgot about the time. We sipped four different wines, each paired with a beautifully curated charcuterie board and some local potato snacks. Having spent time in places like Sonoma, we were genuinely impressed by the quality and complexity of the wines.

We’d heard Sababay’s wine was once written off as sweet grape juice. Safe to say, that reputation is completely outdated. We loved it so much that we bought seven bottles to take back and share with friends. (And yes, I’ll be keeping a few in the guest fridge at K Ko—so feel free to ask!)

A Few Tips for the Perfect Visit

Don’t bring your bike keys – either walk or Grab so you can enjoy your tasting stress-free.

Take photos! Sababay has done a beautiful job of curating their space, especially the tasting setup.

Book directly through WhatsApp. I used MegaTix, and when a few people canceled last minute, I couldn’t get a refund. Booking direct avoids this hassle entirely.

A Winery with a Heart

What makes Sababay even more special is its story. From the beginning, it’s been about empowering local farmers and elevating Balinese wine. That purpose is reflected in every detail—from the staff’s hospitality to the thoughtful tasting pairings.

Final Thoughts

Our group walked away with full hearts and full wine bags. It was a relaxing, enriching experience—the kind of afternoon that reminds you to slow down and savor life. Whether you’re staying for a few nights or a couple of weeks at K Ko, Sababay makes for the perfect afternoon excursion. We’ll definitely be recommending it to future guests.
